Confirmation

In the early Church, when adults were baptized they were also anointed with perfumed oil called chrism.  This anointing highlights the name "Christian," which means "anointed" and is taken from the name of Christ, whom God "anointed with the Holy Spirit."  (Rev. 7:2-3)  It is the third and final part of Christian initiation, which begins with baptism and is renewed each week in a person's participation in Sunday Mass.  Confirmation strengthens the gift of the Holy Spirit received at baptism and is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once given to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.  The Holy Spirit is the Christian's guide throughout life.

The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.

John 14:26

“We can study the whole history of salvation, we can study the whole of Theology, but without the Spirit we cannot understand.
It is the Spirit that makes us realize the truth or – in the words of Our Lord – it is the Spirit that makes us know the voice of Jesus.”

Pope Francis
